It’s Sunday night, more than 24 hours after the Between The Strikes conference finished but there is something still sort of annoying me a little. Â It’s the whole idea that I just can’t decide on a dissertation topic. Â I don’t think I feel a strong enough connection to any topic to be able to write 15,000 words about it inside the time provided. Â Certainly nothing is jumping out at me. Â The problem seems to be that anything I’m passionate about seems to register as a bad idea the more i think about it or discuss it. Â One guy yesterday told me that focusing on O’ Neillism at I’d once planned was fair enough but that it was well covered ground. Â I’m sure he’s right. There has indeed been a whole host of articles, books and such written on O’ Neill and I’d be silly to think that I was going to arrive at anything new, anything groundbreaking. Â It doesn’t seem likely. Â I’m not sure if that’s what the focus should be though, should I be searching for uncovered ground at MA dissertation level? Â I’m getting conflicting images… my lecturer for the Approaches to Social Science Research module was advising us to widen our study, not present a micro study.
So what about that period ” 74-81″ that was discussed at the conference?  Well it seems to me that whilst there are aspects that were covered that were really interesting, very stimulating topics, that I couldn’t  start now to look at them, not with the impediment of modules to hold me back.  I mean I’d considered the Official Republican movement, but to be honest, my modules do not go into this area in sufficient detail to allow me to form a knowledge basis from which to work. This became clear the other day when a vast majority of the names I heard in relation to the topics were new to me.
So what to do then?
I’ll probably sit tight for the meantime. I’ve got itchy fingers from not furiously typing my dissertation but I think it’s probably best to wait for the advisory lecture and in the meantime, hope I get some inspiration.
